County Commission – Lanae Johnson

November 1, 2024 Tagged With: Elections 2024, In Print Nov 2024, Jefferson County Commission

Lanae Johnston

What made you decide to run for County Commission?

I decided to run for County Commissioner after witnessing the internal struggles within the current commission. Initially, I joked about running if a vacancy arose, but when I was approached by the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee to seriously consider it, I knew it was time to act. I learned the appeals court had dismissed two members of the commission. With no clear candidates stepping up, I filed my candidacy.  I decided to continue the process, thinking, “Why not?” I went through the interview process, and in the end, I was selected to serve. It felt like the right moment to step up and contribute.

Why should residents trust you with governing Jefferson County?

Jefferson County residents should trust me with governing the county because I have always been a strong and dedicated advocate for our community. I believe in working together toward a brighter future, one that reflects the values and needs of our diverse population. My track record in activism, leadership, and advocacy speaks to my commitment to represent the voices of all residents. By focusing on vision, inclusion, and collaboration, I am determined to bring about real, tangible results. Together, we can build a stronger, more dynamic economy that benefits everyone in Jefferson County. You can count on me to listen, lead, and work for positive change.

What specific experience and expertise do you have that is relevant to performing the role of County Commissioner?

My experience and expertise uniquely position me to excel as your County Commissioner. I am deeply dedicated to the core values of democracy, including social justice, equality, and opportunity for all. My ability to engage in constructive dialogue and consensus-building ensures that I will work with others to achieve common goals for Jefferson County.

I am an articulate communicator, skilled in simplifying complex issues and fostering open dialogue to understand the needs of our diverse residents. My background in strategic thinking allows me to craft innovative solutions to address our county’s challenges, while navigating political processes to drive positive change.

I lead with integrity, honesty, and an unwavering commitment to ethical conduct, ensuring that I serve Jefferson County’s best interests. I believe in the power of inclusivity and cooperation to move our community forward, and my experience at the federal level has equipped me with the insight needed to effectively represent Jefferson County across all levels of government.

What changes would you make to how the Commission conducts its business?

If elected, I would prioritize increasing transparency and community engagement in the way the Commission conducts its business. One key change I would implement is expanding opportunities for citizen input, ensuring that public hearings and comment periods are more accessible and scheduled at times that accommodate the diverse needs of our residents. I would also streamline the process of adopting ordinances to ensure more efficiency without compromising thorough public review.

Additionally, I would advocate for clearer communication regarding special meetings, ensuring the public has ample notice and access to meeting agendas. Appointments to commissions should be made more transparent and inclusive, with a focus on bringing in a diverse range of voices to better reflect the broader community. My goal is to create a more open, collaborative environment that actively encourages citizen participation while maintaining the integrity of the Commission’s work.

At the end of your term, what is the one thing that you would hope people remember most about your service on the Commission?

At the end of my term, I hope people will remember my unwavering dedication to serving the community and residents of Jefferson County. I want to be known for listening to the voices of all citizens, making thoughtful, informed decisions, and working tirelessly to create positive, lasting change. My goal is to foster a sense of unity and trust in local government, ensuring that every resident feels heard and represented.

Ultimately, if re-elected, I would like to be remembered for delivering results—whether it’s improving public services, enhancing community engagement, or promoting sustainable growth—while always prioritizing the well-being of Jefferson County and its future.
