According to documents published on the PJM Interconnection website in October 2023, the regional electric grid operator recommended a project that would construct a new 500 kilovolt transmission line through Jefferson County starting in 2027. The new line would be built alongside the existing 500 kV line that runs from Summit Point to Millville and across the Blue Ridge into Virginia (see graphic).
The PJM Interconnection began consideration of another round of grid updated in July 2024. During this round, PJM proposed a new 765 kilovolt line to be constructed through Jefferson County starting in 2029.
Both of these transmission lines are part of a larger group of projects proposed to provide power to the data center facilities located in northern Virginia.
