On Sunday, August 29, the Friends of Music will present an outdoor concert featuring the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra performing “Peter and the Wolf,” Sergei Prokoviev’s symphonic fairy tale for children, with bilingual narration in English and Spanish. The story that accompanies the concert will be narrated by Tony Martirano, the founder of Martinsburg’s Tony M Music and Arts Foundation, and Yvette Levi, from Berkeley Springs. The Chamber Orchestra’s music director, Jed Gaylin, will conduct.

The concert will take place at The Amp in Sam Michael’s Park (235 Sam Michaels Lane, Harpers Ferry WV), beginning at 5 pm and will run approximately 45 minutes (gates open at 4 pm). Admission is free.

Guests should plan to bring their own blankets and chairs for seating. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the gym in the community center building across from the Amphitheater. There will be limited concessions available and guests may bring their own food to picnic also. if they wish.

Peter and the Wolf” tells an old Russian tale of a boy who captures a wolf with the help of animal friends. In Prokoviev’s version, each character is represented by a different musical instrument, or group of instruments. The tale, with Prokoviev’s music, was made into a still-very-popular children’s film by Walt Disney in 1946.

The Friends of Music organization is a Shepherdstown-based, non-profit group founded in 1999 to support and promote musical excellence. It supports the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra. Web: www.friendswv.org.
