A Focus On Security
Chief Deputy Clerk Nikki Painter oversees an operation that involves two dozen County employees to oversee the secure processing of the ballot boxes from the precinct workers to the Commission meeting room where the boxes are opened and the ballots are counted. Two poll workers from each precinct hand-deliver the sealed ballot box to the intake team waiting outside of the Government Center. A pair of bailiffs then escorted each box into the Commission meeting room where it was opened and tallied by the employees of the Clerk’s office.

For counting the results, the Clerk’s staff uses a computer system that is isolated from the internet. Results from each precinct are copied to a thumb drive, then transferred to the laptop computer used to upload the results to the Secretary of State’s system.
The printed ballots are retained and secured until the official election canvass by the County Commission on Monday, November 9. As part of the official canvass, the Commission will review all provisional ballots and certify the official results to be reported to the West Virginia Secretary of State.
